I previously worked in the service industry, and one of the most memorable experiences I had encountered was during a busy Saturday lunch rush. The general manager was making his rounds around the restaurant, checking on tables and the service staff, and came across a guest he had recognized before. The guest had come to the grand opening of the restaurant with his wife, and they had been frequent customers for quite some time. When the manager recognized the guest, he realized it had been quite some time since he had seen him last, and the gentleman was dining alone at the same table he and his wife would request at every visit. The couple was elderly, and my manager made the time and connection to stop by the table and visit with the guest. He had learned that his wife had passed and that he wasn’t able to get himself to come back due to the memories of coming with his wife. My manager sat with the man and talked with him for what seemed like forever. As the guest shed a tear, my manager reached over and embraced him with a hug, and bought his meal, and with all his sincerity asked him to please keep coming back. When the man left, I grabbed my manager and explained how thoughtful and moving that interaction was and his response was, “it’s what I am here to do”. Although not every server or manager will have an encounter like this, it is likely that customer will remember that genuine and intimate conversation at a table that holds such sentimental value for the rest of his life.
